Blackwell’s Oxford panel discussion
Join performance maker and poet, Vera Chok, and debut non-fiction authors Daisy J. Hung and Anna Sulan Masing to discuss race, identity and belonging with respect to East and Southeast Asian communities in Britain today. The panel will be chaired by academic and poet Jennifer Wong. Vera’s poetry collection, Angry Yellow Woman, Daisy’s book, I am Not a Tourist: Conversations on Being British Chinese, and Anna Sulan’s book, Chinese and Any Other Asian: Exploring East and South East Asian Identity in Britain, each explore racism and resistance in unique ways.
Through extensive research, storytelling and poetry, the authors give needed visibility to communities that are often unseen and rarely discussed but have been an integral part of British history and society. By challenging existing stereotypes that seek to dehumanise, these books emphasise the diversity and complexity of East and Southeast Asian experiences. Join us for an insightful conversation centring intersectional stories that deserve attention.

Historically regarded as perennial foreigners, British based East and Southeast Asian activists, artists and chroniclers are now moving into mainstream British life. Join a fantastic panel asking what is our legacy and how do we belong – with writer and advocate Daisy J. Hung (I Am Not A Tourist), multidisciplinary writer and community organiser Jenny Lau ((An A-Z of Chinese Food (Recipes Not Included)), writer and academic Dr. Anna Sulan Masing (Chinese And Any Other Asian), multidisciplinary artist and lecturer Moi Tran, and chaired by screenwriter and activist Bec Boey.

Chinese and any other Asian Sunday Salon – ‘Chinese-ness: The violence of homogenization’
The first in the series starts with a big topic – ‘Chinese-ness & the violence of homogenisation’, featuring authors Jenny Lau and Daisy Hung, and academic Xiao Ma. The topic will explore what it means to be ‘Chinese’ in the UK, the commodification of Chinese New Year, political conflation of the individual and state, and how to address the ingrained racism that lead to race-based violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This series is inspired by host Anna Sulan Masing’s book Chinese And Any Other Asian, which explores the identity and experience of East and South East Asians in Britain. These events are salons in the truest form, to build a space for community building and for rigorous exchange! Each salon will start with a panel discussion, open up to a formal Q&A, followed by a shared meal and/or drinks around the table together.
Tickets on Eventbrite.
